Who are GIANT Doctors?
The GIANT Doctors are specialist consultant paediatricians providing care to babies and families in the community. After finishing their Medicine degree, most spend at least 2 years working as a junior doctor in hospitals before training specifically in paediatric care.
This training takes a minimum of six years of basic and then advanced training. Progress into advanced training is not permitted until the trainee has passed both written and practical examinations. Some of our doctors subspecialise in Neonatology or care of newborn babies, meaning they have years of training and experience working with sick babies.
Why would my baby need to see a Paediatrician?
Most babies don’t necessarily need to see a paedatrician after the newborn period. All babies are different and unfortunately, they don’t come with an instruction manual. Challenges with feeding, sleeping and unsettled periods are common and while many resources exist to assist with these issues, some babies will need a more specialist input for rare or uncommon conditions. A paediatrician will determine which babies need investigation or treatment and provide reassurance otherwise that they are in safe hands with other health professionals, such as child health clinics, specialist nurses and midwives, lactation consultants and general practitioners.
We understand parents may experience concerns regarding abnormal bowel movements, prolonged periods of crying, spilling or vomiting, rashes or birthmarks, or appropriate growth. Babies may have many differences even within the same family and develop at different rates, so your paediatrician will advise and reassure you around normal versus abnormal conditions.
Dr Angela Williams is a specialist paediatrician with subspecialist qualifications in Neonatology and Paediatric Clinical Pharmacology. She graduated with her medical degree from the University of Otago in 2001 and was awarded the JM Watt prize in Paediatrics and Child Health.
She worked in paediatrics in several hospitals in New Zealand before deciding that her true calling was caring specifically for babies. She moved to Brisbane in 2009 to complete her specialist training in Neonatology at the Mater Mothers’ Hospital and gained her specialist qualification in 2011.
For several years she worked doing research into improving drug treatment of seizures in newborns and also completed post fellowship training in Paediatric Clinical Pharmacology in 2020. In 2013 she joined the team providing paediatric services to the maternity unit at Greenslopes Private Hospital. She provided care and support to both well and unwell babies for over 10 years before taking a well earned retirement from the long hours and unpredictability of caring for newborns in hospital.
